Community-driven ontology construction in social networking portals
نویسنده
چکیده
The goal of the work presented here is to introduce community-driven ontology management as a new approach to ontology construction and demonstrate the added value to community portals of being community driven. The three main parts of the work are (i) the development of a framework allowing and motivating collaborative ontology construction and reuse for the end users (a person or a community), (ii) building a prototype on the basis of this specification, namely the People’s portal, and (iii) the application of the developed infrastructure to scenarios in semantically-enhanced community portals with the involvement of real users. The development of the framework for community-driven ontology construction is aimed at enriching the established practices for ontology development and population with community-supporting features. The objective of community-driven ontology management is to provide the means and motivations for a large number of users to “weave” and adopt the Semantic Web. The People’s portal infrastructure allows end users to define the content structure (i.e., develop ontologies), to populate ontologies, and to define the ways in which the content is managed on various semantically-enhanced community portals where the infrastructure is applied. An analysis of the functionalities of existing (Semantic) Web community environments and the empirical results obtained in this work are indicative of its feasibility and of the advantages of community-driven ontology construction. In practice, the communities were capable of introducing on the community portals such ontology items as Classes, Subclasses, Properties, Instances, ontology mappings, and of reusing these items afterwards.

Current distributed ontology practices are analyzed and illustrated with typical web portals supporting communication, data sharing and activities of former classmates. The inflexibility and restrictions imposed on users of such portals are demonstrated to support the thesis that introduction of community-driven ontology management is crucial for full-fledged satisfaction of the end user needs ...
متن کاملGrowing World Wide Social Network by Bridging Social Portals Using FOAF
Portals providing the modeling of social relations among people became more and more popular. Although the existing FOAF (Friend of the Friend) ontology developed for modeling such social relations was introduced and enjoyed popularity, it is not used in such extent that it can be considered as World Wide Social Network. Such network can bring benefits (e.g., by providing useful analysis) only ...
متن کاملAn Active, Ontology-driven Network Service for Internet Collaboration
Web portals have emerged as an important means of collaboration on the WWW, and the integration of ontologies promises to make them more accurate in how they serve users collaboration and information location requirements. However, web portals are essentially a centralised architecture resulting in difficulties supporting seamless roaming between portals and collaboration between groups support...
متن کاملCommunity-Driven Ontology Evolution: Gene Ontology Case Study
Communities on the Web capture, represent, and evolve their knowledge using ontologies, either explicitly or implicitly. The Gene Ontology project is a typical and advanced case study of a community-driven ontology creation and evolution. We use this case study to derive and illustrate factors that limit dynamic knowledge sharing in community environments. Specifically, we analyze ontology evol...
